is needed to sustain the core work of the Rangeley Lakes Heritage
Trust to:
- Acquire and
protect significant land to preserve the scenic and open woodland
character of the Rangeley Lakes region
- Monitor the health
of the regions lakes, rivers and streams for sustained water
quality and to prevent the spread of invasive plants
- Introduce the
children of Rangeley, both residents and visitors, to the natural
wonders of the region with activities to enjoy for their
lifetimes.
What will the
Rangeley region look like in 5 years? In 10 years? In 20 years?
Today there are enormous pressures on our open spaces. Paper and
timber companies are selling their vast land holdings and
development is accelerating each year. It is the work we do today as
a community that will determine the future of this exceptional
place.
RLHT supports smart development and a healthy local economy. And we
believe that everyone wins businesses, residents, and seasonal
visitors when we make good choices in land use and land
protection.
 In 2004, RLHT acquired the historic Rapid River
corridor and the 100-acre Hunter Cove Sanctuary at no cost to our
members! In December, RLHT purchased an important property on
Rangeley Lake South Bog. With more than 1,000 acres of woodlands
and 5 miles of shoreline, this parcel abuts the state park and is a vital watershed
protecting the water quality of Rangeley Lake. The shallow waters
of South Bog are important for wading birds and as a brook trout
habitat, significantly enhancing the fishery.
