RANGELEY LAKES HERITAGE TRUST’S

Epic Eclipse
April 11, 2024
Thousands of visitors flooded the region on Monday, April
8th to view the eclipse. They were not disappointed, and despite the
anticipation and press coverage leading up to it, the event exceeded both. Phrases
such as, “blown away,” “profound,” “stunning,” and “incredible” dominated
follow-up conversations. Personally, I fell into the “stunned” camp.
Though I have a basic understanding of the mechanics behind the phenomena, the experience itself dwarfed any thought of the mechanics. This was an essential, inevitable event and one over which we had absolutely no control. It reminded me that despite our success in subduing nature to our own ends, in the end we are left as witnesses staring at a Sun we have never imagined before.
Ben Pearson, author of “The Rangeleys” took these photos – pictures that can remind us of the phenomenal world in which we live, of our dependence upon natural forces that are incomprehensibly powerful, and our privilege to be part of it.
